For centuries the "Lure of
Alaska" has been attracting people from around the world to one of the Most Scenic Areas of the World where Spectacular Wildlife Abounds
and the Sport Fishing for Salmon, Halibut, Ling Cod, Rock Fish,
Northern Pike, Dolly Varden and Fly Fishing for Steelhead, Rainbow, Brown & Cutthroat
Trout is World Class. Observe Harbor Seal colonies, Sea Otters and Bald Eagles while
glaciers calve into the ocean, or watch the fascinating Dall's Porpoises, Orca Killer
Whales and Humpback Whales, the leaping acrobats of the ocean. There are also several
Stellar Sea Lion colonies and lots of Black and Brown Bears which are truly enjoyable to
watch, particularly while feeding during the salmon runs. Rocky Mountain Goats are
observed playing and feeding on the mountain sides from telescopes at the Mendenhall
Glacier Visitor Center in Juneau and there are plenty of Moose and Sitka Deer around for
the wildlife observer. Witness some of the most beautiful scenery and waterfalls in the
world such as those at Tracy Fjiord and Glacier
Bay National Park & Preserve. We guarantee you will have the most enjoyable
vacation/fishing trip of your lifetime. Let us share with you our knowledge and experience
and offer you our services aboard our bareboat and skipperd yachts as you prepare to
explore and fish the inside passage of Southeast Alaska.
Our bareboat yachts consist of the Chinook (3258 Avanti Command
Bridge by U.S. Marine) and our 45' Bayliner Motoryacht (modified from the cockpit version
of the 43' Bayliner Motoryacht). These state of the art yachts are equiped with modern
electronics, efficient propulsion systems, and have all the conveniences of being at home.
They are designed for power cruising and are outfitted for exploring and fishing the
waters of Southeast Alaska. If you want to spend your time sightseeing and fishing, not
traveling to your destination, then these are the yachts for you and your charter group.
The Chinook is moored in downtown Juneau at Aurora Harbor float
F, stall 11, of the small boat harbor which is equipped with shore power for operation of
the electric/alcohol stove and microwave, etc. Within a hort walk is the Breakwater Inn & Restaurant
which overlooks Aurora Harbor. Ask the Breakwater manager, Mike Allen, for hotel discounts
through Chinook Yacht Charters. There are also several other hotels and restaurants within
a short walk of the harbor in historical downtown Juneau for stretching your legs and
freshening up after several days of fishing and sightseeing. For deluxe accommodations
near the docks in downtown Juneau where our yachts are moored, try the Westmark Hotel and
ask for the Alaska Air Lines discount. For accomodations in the Mendenhall Valley near the
airport and Auke Bay, try Grandma's Feather Bed Hotel and Fine Restaurant (with a jacuzzi
in each room) and the Best Western Country Lane Inn. Ask Mel Perkins (907) 789-5566 for
discounted rates through Chinook Yacht Charters at Grandma's Feather Bed and Best Western
Country Lane. All four of these hotels provide free shuttle service from the airport to
the docks and to Auke Bay.
The Chinook sleeps six people and is capable of cruising
comfortably up to 30 mph. Whether you are interested in sight-seeing or reaching remote
fishing destinations, this power cruiser combines comfort with the speed and power of
smaller sport boats. In cases of emergency, this yacht is capable of reaching speeds in
excess of 40 mph. In regards to fuel efficiency, the advanced planing hull technology and
Mercruiser Bravo II power train provide unsurpassed fuel economy and great performance
(over 1.7 miles per gallon with a 280 mile range according to Power
and Motor Yacht magazine test results ). Stern drive trim and Bennett Trim Tabs
are standard equipment on this yacht.
Living accommodations include all the
comforts of home! Forced air heating, hot and cold running water, separate shower and head
for privacy, stainless steel sink in the galley, dual electric/alcohol burners,
refrigerator and freezer, microwave, dining area which converts to a third birth, two
state rooms, lots of storage space and a JVC AM/FM stereo cassette with waterproof
speakers installed on the fly bridge. There is extra seating and a table on the fly bridge
along with an LH5 Loud Hailer, i.e. P.A. system complete with
intercom, anchor signal, and four preprogrammed fog alerts to comply with either inland or
international navigational rules. There are also two VHF radios, an Omni
VHF and P.A. System at the lower helm, and an Eclipse VHF on
the fly bridge. To allow for plenty of electricity, there is a four battery system with
crossover switch and automatic battery charger when hooked up to shore power.
For navigation and fishing the Chinook is equipped with three
fathometers. At the lower helm in the main salon is a Lowrance LMS 350A
Dual Frequency Sonar & Fishfinder including fish alarms, depth sounding alarms for
shallow waters, and GPS (global plotter system) with way points for locating and marking
exceptional fishing spots. The Lowrance also serves as a plotter/trip log in connection
with GPS. On the fly bridge are the other two fathometers. The first is a 400' digital
depth finder by Lowrance for navigational purposes. For the serious fisherman, there is
the Tournament Champion HR (High Resolution) Fishfinder with
SideFinder Technology , built by Bottom Line and Cannon. This fish finder is equipped
with five transducers to cover a path 500' wide to depths of 1500' in order to locate
Salmon and Halibut. Similar to the LMS 350A, the Tournament Champion HR is also equipped
with GPS and way points for marking and locating exceptional fishing spots. Both the LMS
350A and the Tournament Champion HR monitor speed and surface water temperature. Maps and
navigational aids for most of Southeast Alaska, including Marine Atlas Vol.2, Port
Hardy to Skagway, are provided for your convenience.
For the ultimate sport fishing charter, the Chinook is equipped
with Cannon Digi-Troll IV Automated Downriggers. These state
of the art downriggers are capable of trolling the contour of the ocean or river bottoms
to depths of 400' for Salmon, Halibut, Steelhead, Ling Cod, Dolly Varden, Black Rockfish,
Northern Pike, Trout, Smelt, and other Alaska sport fish. The yacht is also equipped with
an electric start Remote Controlled Yamaha Kicker capable of
trolling at speeds up to 5/7 m.p.h. The trolling motor, which also charges the batteries,
allows fisherman to troll for days in remote areas without refueling. There are 6 pole
holders for trolling. On the fly bridge is a twelve pole storage rack.
The Chinook is loaded with equipment including the following:
anchor windlass with 400' of rope and chain, hot & cold transom shower, 10.5' Kodiac
self-bailing dinghy with 10 hp Mercury outboard for going ashore and exploring, large fish
landing net, filleting table, 2 crab pots, 2 crab rings, shrimp pot, three vinyl chairs,
halibut harpoon, barbecue, portable heater, 178 qt. cooler for storing both bait &
sport fish, and raw water wash down pump and hose. For those interested, salmon and
halibut rods by Fenwick & Shakespeare, and Penn trolling reels are available for a
nominal fee. For the serious sightseer and wildlife observer, there are high powered
binoculars and wildlife/nature books aboard.
Who can charter the Chinook or one of our other yachts in
Alaska? You can! Any boating or yachting adventure requires caution, common sense, and
some basic skills. The protected waters of Southeast Alaska, often referred to as the
inside passage, are less forbidding than most open water areas though our twenty foot
tides and rugged geography require some basic precautions. Anyone who is familiar with the
safe operation of motor vessels, and pays attention to navigation basics - such as charts,
compass and piloting - will do fine. If you need more experience or feel
"rusty," we can arrange for instruction in vessel operation and navigation until
you feel confident in your new environment.
